5 Tips for Maximizing the Space in Your Self-Storage Unit

Renting a temporary storage facility in Dubai is one of the smartest decisions you can make to de-clutter and improve your home. With all the furniture, appliances, and other items you don’t use or need gone from your home, you can make your space your own again.

Of course, the more items you place in your storage unit, the better it is for your home. This means you have to know how to maximize the space available in the unit you rent.

Below are five useful tips to help you get the most from your self-storage unit:

  1. Use standard boxes

Using boxes to pack your small and medium-sized belongings is a great way to make use of vertical space and, at the same time, reduce clutter within your storage unit.

Although there is nothing wrong with using the cartons you have at home for storing the items you will store, you will protect your belongings better and save more space in your rental unit if you use standard packing boxes. You can get specially-designed boxes from your storage facility or at a hardware or home improvement store.

Don’t forget to choose durable, good-quality boxes to ensure your possessions are protected during transport and throughout their stay in the storage unit. When packing, place similar items in one box and label each carton so that you will have an easier time finding whatever you may need to bring out in the future.

  1. Consider using shelves

You can bring and use portable metal shelving in your unit to maximize vertical space and keep it organized.

Keep in mind that if you stack too many boxes on top of each other, there is a chance the ones at the bottom will get crushed and crumpled under the weight. But by using metal shelves, you can stack boxes safely and even take advantage of the often unused vertical space of your storage unit.

  1. Dismantle and store furniture pieces vertically

If your couch, dining or coffee tables, dressers, bed frames, and other large furnishings can be disassembled, do so before storing them. This will help keep your unit from getting too crowded with these large items.

In addition, make sure you store your couch, closet, dressers, and beds in your unit standing up. By doing so, you will use less of the ground space for these bulky items.

Also, ensure you pack the parts together so that you can easily assemble them later on. And don’t forget tosafeguard your furniture from dust and dirt while they are in the unit. Cover them with furniture pads or old blankets. You can then stack some light items on the covered furniture pieces you stored horizontally so that you don’t waste any available space.

  1. Place items against the walls

When making your first trip to the storage unit, place bulky furniture pieces such as tables, desks, dressers, and the couch bookcases against the back wall. Next, store the boxes and other smaller items along the outer walls.

Once the spaces by walls are full, you can use the middle area for your other items. However, make sure you leave aisles in between rows from front to back so that you will have easy to access everything.

  1. Keep an inventory and label all the boxes

Always keep an inventory of all the items you place in each box. By following this tip, you can easily find any item you want to retrieve later on; you can simply check the inventory list first.

And, as already mentioned earlier, don’t forget to label each box. When combined, labeling and keeping an inventory will allow you to find anything much faster.

Additionally, if you placed some breakables inside a box, make sure you label the container “Fragile” or “Handle with Care”. This will remind you or whoever is handling them to handle be extra careful with moving or transporting these packages.

As a final tip, put the boxes or items you think you will need to bring out frequently or will use within the next month or so in front. With these items in front, you will have access to them faster without the need to shuffle to the back corner of your storage unit.

Once you have rented your storage unit, follow the tips above when you’re ready to store your items. By doing so, you will get more out of your unit and from your monthly rental fee.
