The Advantages of a Clean Room Communication System

The purpose of a clean room is in protecting the delicate contents of the room from the outside world, or, sometimes, in protecting the outside world from the dangerous contents of the room, as is the case in many biohazard laboratories. Regardless of what it is that the clean room is protecting, however, it is vital that the integrity of the room be maintained – if particles and vapours can freely travel from the outside world to the room and vice versa, then the clean room is compromised.

Where this presents a problem is in communication – how can people within the sealed room communicate with the outside world? Simply opening one of the clean room windows or doors to talk or yelling loudly enough to be heard on the other side of the glass is hardly a practical solution.  A clean room communication system is the best answer to this dilemma, preferably one that allows voice communication for ease and efficiency. However, not every clean room communication system is made equal: some have clear advantages over their rivals.

Clean Room Intercom Systems

A clean room intercom system is widely considered to be the best solution to the problem of clean room voice communication, as it does not compromise the seal of the room at all – simply speak into the microphone at one end, and your message will be relayed through the cables to your counterpart on the other end of the line. Not a single molecule will enter to contaminate the clean room, and the clean room windows will remain safely closed.

However, electronic clean room intercom systems like the one described above have a number of downsides to match their capabilities. For starters, they are reliant on cables and wires to work, which may provide an obstacle inside the clean room, or present shelter for contaminants to escape cleaning. The cables may also eventually fatigue, and, more importantly, they need a source of electricity to work.

With anything electrical, the possibility of component failure is a real and present danger – so many complex and delicate parts mean that even one failing or malfunctioning could result in the entire system breaking down. As a result, the maintenance costs of an electrical clean room intercom system will vastly exceed those of a non-electrical (or “analogue”) system like a melaphone, even before the cost of electricity is taken into account.

Melaphones

A melaphone is a clean room communication system which does not rely on electricity or cabling and does not compromise the integrity of the clean room windows. It consists of a cylinder of reinforced plastic with a guard and barrier which prevents the transfer of particles or vapours, but allows sound to pass unhindered.

Similar to a clean room intercom system, a melaphone is a simple voice communication device, but unlike its electronic rival, it does not require any electricity and doesn’t contain any components which may wear out or malfunction – it’s a simple plastic device with no moving parts and nothing that could inhibit its function. As far as clean room communication systems, the melaphone is perfect. Simply speak right through the clean room windows and let the melaphone carry your voice!
